Dogs Communicate By Body Language

The difference is that while humans primarily use verbal communication, dogs mainly communicate non-verbally through body language and secondarily through vocalizations. This body language includes tail carriage and motion, ear and eye position, body position and movement, and facial expressions.

Dogs Use Vocalization to communicate.

The key for us as dog owners is to understand the gestures a dog uses and reward the dog with the desired response. Dogs want to communicate primarily through body language and only use vocalization if needed. (Although some dogs find the need to vocalize more than others)

Dog communicates by using Scent.

When dogs respond to scent, they react to the chemical pheromones secreted in the smell. Pheromones are present in the dog's saliva, feces, urine, vaginal and preputial secretions, and anal, perianal, and dorsal tail glands.

Dogs Use Sounds to Communicate

Dog vocalizations, or auditory communication, can include barks, growls, howls, whines and whimpers, screams, pants, and sighs. Dogs also communicate via gustatory communication, utilizing scent and pheromones. Humans can communicate with dogs through a wide variety of methods.

Dog Use Eye Contact to Communicate

Just like eye contact is a sign of confidence in humans, your dog's eye contact could be a way for him to show off his confident and charismatic personality. Sure, dogs sometimes make eye contact with humans as a way to connect; in fact, eye contact is considered a sign of charisma at dog shows!

The Way Dogs Approach A situation

Dogs don't shake hands as people do; they use their noses to say hello. So, hold your hand in a fist so they can approach and sniff if they choose. Don't thrust your hand at the dog. They can smell you fine from a distance, and the sudden movement could startle them.

Communicate with your dog by Yawning

According to Turid Rugaas, author of On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals, dogs use yawning to calm themselves intense situations and calm others, including their owners. She suggests yawning at your dog to provide comfort at stressful moments like a vet visit.

Dogs communicate by Licking their Lips.

Lip licking is also often referred to as an appeasement gesture. Dogs exhibit certain behaviors and actions when they feel stressed or uncomfortable. It's usually because they perceive something going on around them as a threat. Dogs licking their lips typically send the message that they are worried.

Quick Guide to Reading A Dog’s Body Language

Tail: IF a dog wags his tail low and slowly, it means he doesn’t know what’s going on. More about the tail wagging high and rapidly, it means he knows you are in charge and is happy. If the seat is raised and stiff or slightly wagging, he is proud and thinks highly of himself. May even challenge you in a friendly way.

Tail: Tucked between lets means the seat is afraid or in pain.

Eyes: Wide open and alert means he is trying to get your attention. ( staring at a dog’s eyes can mean you are challenging him; this is something you don’t want to do with an unfamiliar dog. It’s best to look out of the corner of your eyes.  This is the opposite with cats. They like for you to look them in the eyes.

Eyes: your dog squints their eyes and blinks (cute). It means they are really to play.

Ears: Look at the direction of the ears. Pay attention if the ears are up and focused in a particular order. What are they interested in? They will show you their curiosity by pointing their ears at a new or unfamiliar sound. Your Dog is paying close attention to what’s happening around the dog’s environment.

Ears: Flat against the head, a sign of being scared. They are trying to be overlooked. If your dog licks his face when around new people or dogs, he attempts to show that he is friendly and calms the other dog down. Exposes teeth but no growling.  Stay away.

Dogs stance:

  • rolls overexpose belly. It means the dog wants to please you.

  • When a dog touches your hand with his nose, he wants attention. Pet the dog.

  • The dog puts a paw on your knee. He is trying to usurp authority on you. Look in the dog’s eyes and remove the foot. It will help him know you are in control.
